The draft, the very beginning of the Fantasy Football year. The start of something great! You will need to go into your draft completely prepared. These tips will surely help you out.
1. KNOW YOUR LEAGUE SETTINGS/SCORING
This is extremely important to your draft success. Fully knowing your settings and scoring will determine who you will take and when you will take them. Example, the difference in standard scoring and PPR scoring is HUGE! That will change the rankings of the players. Another example is if your league has custom/different staring lineups/bench spots. If your league has two starting QBs they will be highly targeted and drafted sooner than normal due to demand. Fully knowing your settings going into your draft gives you an instant advantage from those who do not.
2. League Opponents
If you are starting a new league or joining one, this will be difficult to figure out. If you have been in the league a year or more this may help in determining who will be available for you when you are on the clock. Example of this would be if you know your opponents like to draft certain positions early you know you can either attack that position before it gets scarce or chose to go for another. Also if you know they like certain players/teams more than others this will help narrowing down the players you want to take.
3. Wait on QBs and TEs
You will see and hear this a lot and its quite simple. Unless your league gives more scoring for these positions or you get a steal on draft day, wait on them. The depth and scoring difference between the positions are narrow, unless of course you get the top tier guys at the position. I typically like to wait on those positions and stack my roster with depth. This year is important to have that depth on your roster.
4. Don't Draft Solely on Last Year or ADP
Every year is different and mostly unpredictable. Just because a player finished number one at their position last year does not mean they will do the same this year. Have players done it? Yes they have but its rare. Drafting solely on ADP is also a common mistake. Just because a player has a higher/lower ADP does not mean that they will finish in that spot. If you like the player take them. I would warn though don't ignore ADP you do not want to be reaching on players that you can take a round or two later.
5. Have Fun!
How hard is it to have fun drafting? Should be easy. But don't forget about the clock or getting out of the zone. Its easy to have too much fun and get in bad drafting situations. If you are going to have some drinks, go ahead and have some drinks but don't go over your limit. You want to be ALL IN and the most prepared/skilled person drafting. Also you can make draft day a time to have the last placed team from the previous year to do their punishment.
Remember that your team almost NEVER is the same from the draft to the end of the year.
Last Second Tip: Bring/have a cheat sheet!!
